The strict tribunal made up of the experts Dr. Mariano Sanz, Dr. Cosme Gay-Escoda and Dr. Pau Ginebra bestowed the Cum Laude qualification on the candidate Carolina Manresa for her work entitled “Study on the Correlation between histomorphometric parameters and the evaluation of the stability of implants. A new method for determining BIC based on BS-SEM images.”
This doctoral thesis falls within the field of implantology as part of a project aimed at improving clinical predictions as regards implants. The first part of the study establishes a procedure for analysing images to measure bone implant contact (BIC) by an objective, systematic approximation based on back-scattered scanning electronic microscope images (BS-SEM). In the second part, in order to test the hypothesis that the measurements of the implants’ stability using resonance frequency analysis (RFA) correlate with the histomorphometric data (BIC), an experiment was carried out with beagle dogs. Finally, in order to clarify the currently controversial relationship between RFA and the histomorphometric parameters, the literature published on this discipline over recent decades was reviewed.
